Continuing Education (CE) is an integral, and life-long part of your massage career. It is the key to keeping your practice up-to-date, as well as expanding your own knowledge. The Institute for Therapeutic Massage offers many continuing education courses for Certified Massage Therapists, as well as courses aimed at individuals interested in learning a specific field.
We are approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage* and Bodywork (NCBTMB) as (what was formerly known as Category A) Continuing Education Units, or CEU's, and our instructors are highly qualified professionals with many years of experience behind them. While all of our classes take place at one of our 6 NJ based massage therapy schools, these credits can also be applied to national certification, New York Board of Massage requirements**, Florida board of massage requirements, other states whose licensure requirements accept these credits, and the New York Physcial Therapy Board.
In New Jersey, a certificant is required to complete 20 continuing education hours directly related to massage therapy per biennial period to renew his or her certification, and ITM is approved by the New Jersey Department of Education to provide these hours. We so so with a focus and dedication to quality education that is continually updated as new information and technology becomes available for both the massage student and the experienced therapist looking to enhance their level of expertise. Should a graduate decide to take and pass the National Certification Exam, he/she would be required to acquire at least 50 points every four years to retain their certification status. Our approval allows therapists who take continuing education here to apply those hours towards their requirement.
ITM welcomes therapists who may or may not be graduates of our school to attend our weekend elective and continuing education courses. To register follow the link below.
* For the NCBTMB, certificants are required to submit 48 continuing education hours and 200 hours of work experience that were completed during their four-year certification cycle. Also, six hours of ethics must be taken from an NCBTMB Approved Provider, with two of the six hours on Standard V of NCBTMB’s Standards of Practice.
** New Registration Requirements for New York Massage Therapists
The Board of Regents approved regulations to implement the statutory requirement (§7807 the Education Law) that becomes effective on January 1, 2012, requiring 36 hours of mandatory continuing education for re-registration of licensed massage therapists every three years. The requirement will be phased in during the first three years, so that those re-registering during that time period will only require the number of hours of continuing education attributable to the number of months from January 1, 2012 until their registration due dates, e.g. registration on July 1, 2012 would require six hours of continuing education. There is a provision for a one-year conditional registration for persons who for good cause have not completed the required hours.
