Hospital Based Massage Therapy Program Added

The Institute for Therapeutic Massage offers this exciting 50-hour Hospital Based Massage Therapy Program in conjunction with Atlantic Health Systems at Overlook Hospital, Summit, NJ. This advanced program is specifically designed for massage therapists, and will provide the opportunity to work with doctors, nurses, and hospital patients to learn how to master the art and science of medically based massage in a real clinical setting.

The patients receiving massage will have a medical history that includes acute and chronic conditions within the hospital environment.

ITM Chosen As Recipient For 2008 Year-end Community Outreach Grant!

The Institute for Therapeutic Massage, Inc., New Jersey’s largest massage therapy school is proud to announce that it has been named a recipient of Biotone’s 2008 Community Outreach Award Program.  This award is given to massage therapy programs that help individuals in their community and at the same time help to educate the public about the benefits of massage therapy.  ITM’s Oncology Massage Certification Program offers students the opportunity to provide massage to patients at UMDNJ’s University Hospital, located in Newark, NJ.  Many patients at University Hospital are charity care patients who would not be able to afford the cost of a massage, were it not offered free of charge, through this program.

Sue Walther, a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner at UMDNJ’s University Hospital made this comment “I have had the distinct pleasure of being a minor liaison between the students from the Institute for Therapeutic Massage and patients throughout University Hospital.  The surprise and smiles from the patients I approach regarding their interest in having a massage student visit them, compares to nothing I have seen. When I first discovered that the students were visiting patients on the oncology floor, my first thought was ““There are patients all over the hospital who would greatly benefit from this type of healing intervention.””  I have even had physicians order massage for their patients on days when the students are not here, leaving the nurses to wonder why there is not a full time massage program on-site.

“Little did I know the impact that this program would have on the lives of patients, their family members and healthcare workers, when I put this program together, but to see the look on the patient’s faces when they’re receiving a massage and hearing the comments from the massage therapists shows the tremendous benefit that this program has for everyone involved” says James T. Zazeski, the program’s developer and director.

Individuals interested in learning more about this program or other community service projects involving The Institute for Therapeutic Massage are encouraged to call 973-839-6131 for more information.

ITM Donates Time & Resources To Gildas Club

On January 24th, 2009 student massage therapists of The Institute for Therapeutic Massage will be donating their time and skills by offering 1 hour massages to the public in an effort to help the financially struggling Gilda’s Club of Northern New Jersey, a cancer support facility located in Hackensack, New Jersey. Gilda’s Club is a non-profit organization that offers free programs, such as support groups, art classes, lectures and children’s programs to those individuals suffering from cancer as well as their families and caregivers. The club announced in June that it could not meet its $811,000 annual budget. Billionaire real estate developer Leonard Stern has pledged $200,000 to keep the facility open, but so much more is needed.

The massages will be offered at 2 locations: 1069 Ringwood Ave in Haskell, NJ and 213 Route 35 in Red Bank, NJ. People wishing to help out Gilda’s Club are encouraged to call for an appointment by phoning ITM in Haskell at (973) 831-4111 and Red Bank (732) 936-0195 as a limited number of spaces are available. All proceeds will go to Gilda’s Club.

Community Outreach is not new to ITM.  Student therapists of the nation’s first and only accredited Oncology Massage Certification Course regularly provide massage to patients at University Hospital in Newark.  “Everyone’s life has been touched by cancer in some fashion and this effort is a way for ITM and the public to help this amazing organization”, says Lisa Helbig, Executive Director and owner of ITM, whose sister was recently treated for cancer.  So come out, bring your tight and tired muscles and help support Gilda’s Club at the same time, your body and heart will thank you for it.
